Story Of Prophet Ibrahim (AS)

The Life, Journey, and Miracles of Prophet Ibrahim (AS)

Among the greatest prophets in Islam stands Prophet Ibrahim (AS) who Muslims know by his biblical name Abraham because his complete devotion to Allah along with his faith and strength are deeply admired. Great adversity marked his life as he persisted until Allah honored him with the title Khalilullah (Friend of Allah). The article studies Prophet Ibrahim's life through his spiritual journey. It examines his miracles and what he learned from them while referencing Quranic passages and opinions from Mufti Menk and Dr. Israr Ahmed.

Early Life and Quest for Truth

At his birth, Prophet Ibrahim AS existed in a community where people practiced the worship of idols. Since childhood, he started disbelieving the beliefs of his community while searching for authentic information. The Quran tells the story of his search through Surah Al-An’am (6:74-79) when he talks to Father Azar about idols before looking at stars which he rejects as divine beings.

“I have shifted my gaze to face the Author of all heavens and earth because I prefer truth while not joining those who credit Him with partners.” (Surah Al-An'am 6:79)

Confrontation with His People and the Fire Miracle

Ibrahim (AS) declared monotheism to the community which led to a challenge against their idol worship. His act of breaking their statues before Nimrod resulted in a trial which proceeded to King Nimrod. After being filled with anger the king demanded Ibrahim to jump into a large fire pit.

In the verse of Surah Al-Anbiya (21:69), Allah instructed for the fire to become both temperate and innocuous to the prophet Ibrahim (AS).

“We said, ‘O fire, be coolness and safety upon Ibrahim.’”

His prophetic status was proven through this wondrous event yet numerous people persisted in doubt.

Migration and Tests of Faith

Due to continuous persecution, Ibrahim (AS) moved from land to land beginning in Egypt before ending up in Palestine and then Makkah. Various challenges tested his complete faith but the most severe one was when God asked him to kill his favorite son Ismail (AS).

Allah presents in Surah As-Saffat (37:102-107) how the father and his son followed His instructions yet received a ram as a divine reward after Ibrahim (AS).

The verses of (Surah As-Saffat 37:107) state “We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.”

People commemorate the moment of submission by observing Eid al-Adha every year.

The Miracle of Zamzam and the Kaaba Construction

After Ibrahim (AS) and his wife Hajar together with their infant Ismail (AS) ended up in Makkah's barren desert he left them there. The struggle of Hajar caused Allah to create the Zamzam well which remains a sacred water source in present times.

According to Surah Al-Baqarah (2:127), it is mentioned that Ibrahim (AS) together with Ismail (AS) were instructed to build the Kaaba.

When Ibrahim along with Ismail raised the House foundations he proclaimed to God saying “Our Lord accept this construction from us. Indeed You hear everything and know all.” Father grant acceptance to our deeds because You hear all things and possess knowledge of every situation.

Debate with King Nimrod

His debate with King Nimrod stood out strongly because Nimrod proclaimed himself as the divine ruler. Through Surah Al-Baqarah (2:258) Ibrahim (AS) stood against him with these words:

“Indeed, Allah brings up the sun from the east, so bring it up from the west.

The amazing creation demonstrated Allah’s majestic power beyond Nimrod’s ability to comprehend it.
